Seven Oaks Preserve in Belmont, NC: A Beautiful Fall Hike Near Lake Wylie

On November 21, 2024, a friend and I crossed the South Carolina border into Belmont, North Carolina, to explore Seven Oaks Preserve for the first time. We couldn’t have picked a better day. Fall foliage was at its peak, transforming the forest into a breathtaking display of fiery reds, brilliant oranges, and golden yellows. Every bend in the trail revealed another postcard-worthy view, making this one of the most colorful hikes I’ve experienced.

Seven Oaks Preserve

Established in 2011, Seven Oaks Preserve protects 75 acres of scenic woodlands along the shores of Lake Wylie. The approximately 5-mile loop winds through a variety of landscapes, including peaceful pine forests, quiet wetlands, rustic wooden bridges, and shoreline overlooks. The changing scenery keeps the hike interesting from start to finish, especially during the autumn months when the forest comes alive with vibrant color.

The preserve can be accessed from two trailheads: one on South New Hope Road and the other near Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Parking is available at both locations, although neither offers restroom facilities, so plan accordingly.

The trail was fairly busy during our visit, with a steady mix of hikers and a handful of mountain bikers enjoying the beautiful weather. Around the halfway point, however, the peaceful sounds of nature were briefly interrupted by construction equipment. It appeared that a new residential subdivision was being developed adjacent to the gravel section of the trail leading toward the botanical garden. Naturally, curiosity got the best of us, so we took a quick peek through the fence and snapped a photo of the project. Fortunately, this short stretch was the only noticeable interruption and did little to diminish the beauty of the preserve.

In fact, the final section of the loop—beyond the botanical garden—turned out to be the highlight of the hike. The trees were absolutely glowing with rich fall colors, creating a spectacular finale that made the last mile especially memorable.

Overall, I found the trail to be easy and well-maintained. While several hikers were using trekking poles, I carried mine but never felt the need to use them. Along the route we passed a couple of benches, including one overlooking Lake Wylie. It was the perfect place to pause, soak in the peaceful surroundings, and enjoy a quiet moment of reflection.

Seven Oaks Preserve

Seven Oaks Preserve exceeded my expectations and quickly became one of my favorite fall hikes near Charlotte. If you’re looking for an easy, scenic trail featuring lake views, forests, wetlands, and some of the best autumn colors in the region, I highly recommend visiting Seven Oaks Preserve in late October through November. Every step offers another picture-perfect scene that’s well worth the trip.
