We visited McDowell Nature Preserve on November 14, 2020, and were delighted to find that fall had not quite left yet. Covering approximately 1,132 acres, this beautiful preserve in Charlotte, North Carolina, offered a peaceful combination of colorful foliage, wooded trails, and scenic water views.

The weather was perfect for exploring, with temperatures around 66°F. As we wandered through the preserve, we encountered fishermen enjoying the water, hikers exploring the trails, and boaters taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings. I also spotted a photographer capturing family portraits, which didn’t surprise me—McDowell Nature Preserve is an incredibly picturesque setting.
The preserve offers several relatively short and easy trails, making it a great place for a relaxed outdoor outing rather than a strenuous hiking adventure. The combination of forest, open spaces, and water creates plenty of opportunities for photography and simply enjoying nature.

I especially enjoyed visiting in November when the remaining fall foliage added beautiful pops of color throughout the preserve. With its peaceful atmosphere, accessible trails, and scenic landscape, McDowell Nature Preserve quickly became one of those places I’d happily return to explore further.
