We spent a cold Saturday, January 8, 2022, hiking at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill, South Carolina. It was a family outing since my brother was visiting, making the chilly winter day even more enjoyable. Fall was just ending, so most of the trees were bare and the landscape was dominated by muted browns. I imagine the greenway must be especially colorful in spring when the forest comes alive again.

We started with the Mill Pond Trail, a 1.4-mile route, before continuing onto a portion of the Prairie Loop, which is approximately 3.1 miles. The trails were peaceful, although we encountered quite a few mountain bikers along the way. Two friendly cyclists even agreed to let me photograph them—thank you! Hikers and bicyclists share many of the trails, generally traveling in opposite directions, so it’s important to stay alert and pay attention to trail etiquette.
One thing I highly recommend is picking up a trail map at the entrance. We found ours extremely helpful for navigating the extensive network of trails and deciding which sections to explore.
Spanning approximately 2,100 acres, Anne Springs Close Greenway offers miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The property features ponds, lakes, bridges, a tunnel, a dog park, and numerous scenic spots. Lake Haigler, the largest lake on the property, is one of the highlights. There are several entrances, including Lake Haigler, Dairy Barn, Adventure Road, and Blue Star. We used the Adventure Road entrance because it was closest to the historic mill area.

Beyond hiking, the greenway hosts a variety of events and provides venues for weddings, birthdays, and other gatherings. When I checked the event calendar, I noticed activities ranging from sunset yoga to Italian wine dinners and guided tours. There seems to be something happening throughout the year, making this much more than simply a place to hike.

Anne Springs Close Greenway is a wonderful place for a family outing, with enough trails and attractions to keep you exploring for hours. Even on a cold winter day, we enjoyed the peaceful scenery and shared trails. I would love to return in spring when everything is green and blooming.
Before leaving, I was already thinking about returning to Anne Springs Close Greenway in another season. Winter gave the woods a quiet, almost peaceful character, but I would love to see the same trails when spring brings fresh green leaves, wildflowers, and warmer temperatures. With so many miles of trails, one visit is certainly not enough to experience everything the property offers. I also enjoyed seeing how the greenway accommodates different outdoor activities while still maintaining a natural atmosphere. Whether you’re hiking with family, biking with friends, walking your dog, or simply looking for a beautiful place to spend the day, Anne Springs Close Greenway offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
