Located between the towns of Westmore and Sutton, Lake Willoughby covers nearly two square miles and reaches depths of more than 300 feet, making it the deepest lake in Vermont. Its crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery attract visitors year-round for swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking, and simply enjoying the peaceful beauty of the landscape.

One of the best places to take in the iconic views of Lake Willoughby is North Beach on Willoughby Lake Road. From the shoreline, visitors are treated to a postcard-worthy panorama of the lake framed by the towering peaks of Mount Pisgah to the east and Mount Hor to the west. The dramatic contrast of blue water, forested mountains, and autumn foliage makes this a perfect spot for photography.

During our visit, we hiked the South Shore Loop Trail, a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of the lake up close. The trailhead offers a spacious parking area with a few portable restrooms, making it a convenient starting point.

The 2.1-mile loop is an easy-to-moderate hike, with the main challenges coming from exposed tree roots, rocks, and uneven sections of trail. The first half of the hike follows the shoreline, offering peaceful glimpses of the sparkling lake through the trees. The combination of calm water views and colorful foliage creates a truly scenic walk.

As the trail continues, it leaves the lakeshore and winds through a quiet forest filled with the sounds of nature. The wooded section provides a completely different experience, with moss-covered rocks, towering trees, and a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.

What makes the South Shore Loop special is the variety packed into a short distance—a beautiful lakeside stroll combined with a tranquil woodland hike. It is an ideal trail for families, casual hikers, photographers, and anyone wanting to experience the beauty of Vermont without a strenuous climb.
