Breathtaking Canmore Alberta: Unforgettable Mountain Views, Trails & Small-Town Charm, Canada

Canmore, Alberta, is a picturesque mountain town about 50 miles west of Calgary and one of the closest communities to Banff National Park. Once a thriving coal-mining town beginning in 1887, Canmore’s mining industry gradually declined before ending completely in 1979. Today, it has transformed into a popular destination surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. For a photographer, Canmore is a dream—I found beautiful photo opportunities practically everywhere I looked.

We visited Canmore on September 15, 2022, and even the drive from Calgary was scenic. We stopped at a beautiful roadside overlook to photograph the mountains before continuing into town. Once in Canmore, we hiked the Three Sisters Creek Trail and walked portions of the Bow River Trail, Bow River Loop, and Canmore Creek Trail.

The Bow River Trail was one of my favorites. It is an easy, peaceful walk that meanders alongside the river with beautiful mountain views. Along the way, we stopped to admire the stunning backyard of a log home and met its talented owner, local painter and avid gardener Verna Korkie. It was one of those unexpected encounters that made our visit even more memorable. We also drove to the Three Sisters Overlook, which I highly recommend for its incredible views of Canmore’s iconic peaks.

Downtown Canmore was just as charming. When we arrived for dinner, several streets were closed to cars, allowing pedestrians to wander freely. Flower baskets decorated the streets, while sculptures and statues added character to the cozy downtown.

I loved the relaxed local atmosphere and enjoyed every meal we had during our stay. My favorite was dinner at Elita, a Ukrainian restaurant. Both dishes we ordered were delicious, and because the restaurant wasn’t busy, the owner and chef joined us for an interesting conversation after our meal. We discovered that despite working in completely different fields—software development and cooking—we had experienced many of the same challenges in the corporate world. Our other meals included a takeout shawarma plate and a downtown dinner where we sampled poutine, a classic Canadian dish of fries topped with gravy and melted cheese.

Canmore quickly became one of those places I knew I could return to again and again. The combination of dramatic mountain scenery, peaceful river trails, charming streets, excellent food, and friendly locals made our visit especially enjoyable. If you love photography, hiking, and beautiful mountain towns, Canmore deserves a place on your Canadian Rockies itinerary.

Tip: Allow more time than you think you’ll need. We found ourselves wanting to stop constantly for photographs.
