Emerald Lake in British Columbia’s Yoho National Park is one of those places that stops you in your tracks. We visited on September 18, 2022, and even before reaching the shoreline, we knew we were in for something special. The parking lot was overflowing, with cars lining the road for nearly a mile — a clear sign that something extraordinary was waiting at the end of the walk.
When the lake finally came into view, the crowds suddenly made perfect sense. The water glowed an unreal shade of green, framed by towering mountains and distant glaciers. It’s the kind of beauty that feels almost impossible, like nature showing off.

We wandered along a small portion of the Lakeshore Trail, a flat 5.2‑km loop that circles the lake. Even with the crowds, the atmosphere was peaceful. Kayakers dotted the water, their bright boats drifting across the glassy surface. Every turn offered another postcard‑worthy view.
Locals say the snow piles deep here in winter, transforming the entire area into a quiet, frozen wonderland. Whether in summer or winter, Emerald Lake is absolutely worth the stop when exploring Yoho National Park. The scenery lingers with you long after you leave.
If You Go
- Arrive early — Parking fills quickly, and overflow stretches down the road. Morning light on the lake is spectacular.
- Walk the Lakeshore Trail — The full loop is a flat 3miles, but even a short stroll offers unforgettable views.
- Watch the kayakers — Rentals are available in summer, and the bright boats add color to the emerald water.
- Prepare for crowds — Emerald Lake is popular for a reason. Patience pays off with postcard‑worthy scenery.
- Expect deep snow in winter — The area transforms into a quiet, snowy wonderland, but conditions can be challenging.
- Explore nearby Yoho highlights — Natural Bridge, Takakkaw Falls, and Emerald Basin are all close by.
