Breathtaking Banff Gondola: Spectacular 360-Degree Views from Sulphur Mountain, Canada

On September 17, 2022, we rode the Banff Gondola to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, and the spectacular 360-degree views were absolutely worth the trip.

We considered hiking to the summit, but the 6.8-mile Sulphur Mountain Trail with approximately 2,480 feet of elevation gain sounded rather intimidating. Instead, we opted for the 10-minute gondola ride and enjoyed the scenery without the strenuous climb.

The round-trip gondola ticket cost us the equivalent of approximately US$55. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly impressive. Looking through the gondola windows, we could see the dramatic peaks and valleys of the Canadian Rockies unfolding below us.

Exploring Sulphur Mountain Summit

Once we reached the summit, we set out to explore the 0.7-mile boardwalk. Although the distance is short, there are quite a few steps along the way. The effort was rewarded with spectacular views in every direction.

From the boardwalk, we admired the Bow Valley, six surrounding mountain ranges, and the town of Banff far below. The combination of rugged peaks, forests, and the valley landscape was breathtaking.

It was a beautiful sunny day, which made the scenery even more spectacular. It was also a very busy day, so we shared the boardwalk with plenty of other visitors. Even with the crowds, there were numerous opportunities to stop, take in the scenery, and capture photographs.

There is also a restaurant and coffee shop at the summit, making it easy to spend several hours enjoying the views without having to rush back down.

For hikers, the Sulphur Mountain Trail offers the opportunity to earn those views on foot. For those who would rather save their energy—or simply don’t have the time or desire for a strenuous climb—the gondola is an excellent alternative.

For us, taking the gondola was the perfect choice. The ride was quick, scenic, and allowed us to experience one of Banff’s most spectacular viewpoints without tackling the challenging hike.

I think Sulphur Mountain is a must-see when visiting Banff, whether you choose to hike to the summit or ride the gondola. The panoramic views alone make the experience unforgettable.
