Breathtaking 4 miles on Parker Ridge Trail: An Unforgettable Hike to Saskatchewan Glacier, Banff, Canada

We hiked the Parker Ridge Trail on September 21, 2022, during our visit to the Canadian Rockies. With its dramatic mountain scenery and spectacular views of Saskatchewan Glacier, this picturesque trail quickly became one of the highlights of our trip.

Parker Ridge Trail

The trail is approximately 4 miles round trip with about 1,108 feet of elevation gain. The climb was challenging for me, and I took my time making my way upward through the switchbacks. I stopped frequently—not only to catch my breath but also to admire the incredible scenery surrounding us.

Every turn revealed another breathtaking view, and I found myself constantly reaching for my camera. I tried my best to capture the beauty through my lens, although the scenery was far more impressive in person.

Parker Ridge Trail Hike

The first mile is primarily uphill, so the climb can feel strenuous, particularly if you’re hiking at a slower pace like I was. Fortunately, there are plenty of scenic distractions along the way.

During our visit, the trail was muddy in places, and a few sections were slippery because of melting snow lingering in the shaded areas. Good hiking shoes with reliable traction would definitely be helpful under these conditions.

The trail was easy to follow, although several sections had been closed off to allow vegetation and surrounding areas to recover. We made sure to stay on the designated trail and respect the restoration areas.

Parker Ridge is a popular hike, and we encountered quite a few groups of hikers along the way. Despite the popularity, there were still plenty of moments when I could pause and appreciate the vastness of the surrounding landscape.

Saskatchewan Glacier Viewpoint

The real reward comes at the top.

The lookout provides spectacular views of Saskatchewan Glacier, one of the most impressive sights in the area. Standing above the valley and looking toward the enormous glacier made every step of the climb worthwhile.

Unfortunately, the sun was directly in front of us during our visit, which made photography somewhat challenging. Even so, I couldn’t resist taking plenty of photographs.

The panoramic scenery, rugged peaks, glacier, and expansive valley create a landscape that is difficult to describe—and even harder to capture in a photograph.

Parker Ridge is definitely a hike I would recommend to anyone visiting the Canadian Rockies. The climb requires some effort, but the spectacular Saskatchewan Glacier views at the top make it well worth it.
