On September 22, 2022, we stopped at the Kananaskis Visitor Centre on our drive back to Canmore. Since we were short on time, a park ranger recommended several short hikes nearby, and we chose one about 20 minutes down the road. The drive alone was spectacular, with mountain scenery in every direction. We quickly realized that Kananaskis, an area that had not even been on our radar, was an incredibly picturesque part of the Canadian Rockies.

One of our first stops was the bridge on Mount Allan Drive, where we paused to photograph the beautiful Kananaskis River. The large parking area was the starting point for several trails, and we decided to hike the 2.3-mile loop beginning on Hay Meadow Trail, continuing toward Troll Falls, and returning via Troll Falls Trail. With approximately 571 feet of elevation gain, the hike was relatively easy and filled with beautiful scenery. Along the way, we met two gentlemen counting Golden Eagles. Golden Eagle migration is carefully studied in this area, with researchers monitoring migration patterns and population trends. Although we didn’t spot any eagles, we enjoyed chatting with them and learning about their work.

After the hike, we made a quick photo stop at Barrier Lake before returning to the visitor centre. We also explored the trail behind the centre that the ranger had recommended. The trail led toward the river, and we followed it for about a mile before turning around. It continued farther along the water, but with limited time, we had to call it a day. Our short visit to Kananaskis was enough to convince us that this beautiful area deserves much more time. It wasn’t part of our original plans, but when we return to the Canadian Rockies, Kananaskis will definitely be on our itinerary.

Our brief visit to Kananaskis was one of those unexpected travel discoveries that stayed with us long after we left. The peaceful trails, dramatic mountains, sparkling river, and chance to learn about Golden Eagle migration made the experience memorable. We only scratched the surface, but Kananaskis is definitely calling us back.
