Epic Autumn Radiance on the Tanawha Trail: A Viaduct‑to‑Stacked Rock Hike Through Peak Blue Ridge Color, NC

I hiked a gorgeous section of the Tanawha Trail on October 17, 2022, beginning at the famous Linn Cove Viaduct and ending at the Stacked Rock parking area. Before starting the hike, we pulled off at a viewpoint to admire the viaduct from a distance. Its elegant curve hugging the mountainside is always impressive, but in fall it becomes a floating ribbon above a tapestry of gold, crimson, and amber. The contrast between the sleek engineering of the viaduct and the wild sweep of autumn color is one of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s most unforgettable sights.

We continued to the Linn Cove Visitor Center and parked. I walked first to the observation deck — a spot I’d visited in a different season. Seeing it in autumn was breathtaking. The mountains were drenched in color, and the viaduct seemed to glide effortlessly through the foliage. It was absolutely glorious. The crisp October air carried that unmistakable fall scent — a mix of leaves, cool breeze, and distant spruce — making the overlook feel even more immersive.

After soaking in the view, I headed in the opposite direction toward Beacon Heights. My plan was to hike all the way there, but after one mile — reaching the Stacked Rock parking area — I decided to turn around. The trail was more technical than I expected, with plenty of roots, rocks, and uneven footing. Combined with fatigue from a previous hike, it felt wise to save Beacon Heights for another day.

Even so, this stretch of the Tanawha Trail delivered everything I hoped for. The forest glowed with peak fall color, and the sunlight filtered through the canopy in warm, shifting patterns. At times the trail narrowed into rhododendron tunnels; at others it opened into rocky clearings where the mountains peeked through. Every bend offered a new burst of foliage or a quiet moment where the only sound was leaves drifting underfoot. I’d rate this section moderate, mostly due to the technical footing, but the scenery makes the effort worthwhile.

If You Go

  • Park at Linn Cove Visitor Center — Easy access and a perfect starting point for viaduct views.
  • Visit the observation deck — Peak fall color makes this overlook unforgettable.
  • Follow the Tanawha Trail toward Beacon Heights — Expect roots, rocks, and narrow sections.
  • Turn around at Stacked Rock if you prefer a shorter, scenic hike.
  • Expect moderate difficulty — Technical terrain is the main challenge.
  • Check Parkway conditions — Weather can cause temporary closures.
  • Visit in mid‑October — This section shines brightest during peak foliage.
