Stunning Catawba Falls Hike: The Reopened Trail in Old Fort, NC

On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, we made our way to Catawba Falls in Old Fort, North Carolina, eager to experience the newly reopened trail. After being closed for major improvements, the trail officially reopened on May 31, 2024, and it has quickly become one of western North Carolina’s most popular hikes. Even on a Tuesday afternoon, the main parking lot was completely full, so I found a spot along the road near the parking lot entrance.

We chose to hike the 4-mile loop, beginning on the scenic Catawba Falls River Trail. The adventure started with a walk across a footbridge spanning the Catawba River. Just beyond the bridge, we passed the moss-covered remains of a historic hydroelectric plant dating back to the early 1900s, adding a touch of history to the beautiful forest setting.

The trail meandered alongside the river, crossing another bridge before arriving at the breathtaking Lower Catawba Falls. Along the way, several sections of the trail were muddy and slippery from recent moisture. I was grateful to have both my hiking stick and sturdy hiking boots, and I highly recommend bringing them if you plan to hike this trail.

The Lower Falls plunge approximately 100 feet into a clear pool below, creating a spectacular scene well worth taking time to admire and photograph. After soaking in the views, we began the climb up the newly constructed 580-step staircase leading toward the Upper Catawba Falls. Although the climb is steady, the stairs are well built, and occasional glimpses of the surrounding mountain ridges made for welcome distractions.

The Upper Falls cascade another 50 feet, and a scenic overlook provides an excellent vantage point. While this section of the trail was still being completed during our visit, the overlook was open and easily accessible.

After a short rest, we continued along the Ridge Trail to complete the loop. I was happy we chose to hike up via the River Trail and return on the Ridge Trail. Personally, I find climbing stairs much easier than descending them, so this direction worked well for me. Hikers may prefer the opposite route depending on what feels more comfortable.

Although the Ridge Trail has no staircases, it features a sustained climb with significant elevation gain. Our hiking app recorded about 4 miles with 864 feet of elevation gain, while the Ridge Trail itself felt closer to 1,000 feet of climbing. We completed the hike in roughly two hours, including plenty of stops for photos and enjoying the scenery.

If you’re comfortable with moderate elevation gain, I highly recommend hiking the Catawba Falls Loop. Between the lush forest, historic ruins, scenic river crossings, and the stunning Lower and Upper Falls, it’s easy to see why this has become one of North Carolina’s most beloved waterfall hikes.
