We hiked Upper Creek Falls in Pisgah National Forest near Newland, North Carolina, on July 11, 2021. Located just off Highway 181, this short hike packs plenty of scenery and adventure into approximately 1.5 miles.

Don’t let the short distance fool you. The trail features several switchbacks and some fairly steep sections, so I would rate it as moderate. We first made our way to the lower falls, where we found several people enjoying the water on a warm summer day. The falls create a beautiful natural swimming hole, and we watched as people slid down the smooth rocks into the refreshing pool. It looked like a wonderful way to cool off!
After spending some time around the lower falls, we continued along the trail toward the upper falls, which were the highlight of our hike. The spectacular Upper Creek Falls plunges approximately 80 feet through the gorge, creating an impressive scene surrounded by lush greenery and rugged rock formations. The combination of the rushing water, forest, and dramatic gorge made the falls absolutely beautiful.

Although Upper Creek Falls NC is a relatively short hike, the switchbacks and steeper sections provide enough challenge to make reaching the falls rewarding. With two waterfalls, a natural swimming hole, and beautiful Pisgah National Forest scenery, this is a wonderful destination for anyone looking for a scenic waterfall hike near Newland.

Upper Creek Falls NC was a wonderful discovery in Pisgah National Forest. The short but moderately challenging trail led us to beautiful waterfalls and a refreshing swimming hole. The dramatic upper falls were especially memorable and well worth the effort.
