Hawksbill Mountain: Spectacular 360-Degree Views Above Linville Gorge, NC

Hawksbill Mountain is widely considered one of the most rewarding hikes in North Carolina, and after experiencing it for ourselves, it’s easy to understand why. This relatively short 2.5-mile out-and-back trail leads to some of the most breathtaking views in the Blue Ridge Mountains, overlooking rugged peaks, deep gorges, and winding rivers.

The hike begins from the parking area and climbs approximately 700 feet through the beautiful forests of Pisgah National Forest. Depending on who you ask, the trail is rated anywhere from moderate to strenuous. While the distance is short, the climb is steady and the trail can be challenging in places. Exposed roots, rocky sections, and uneven terrain require hikers to pay attention to their footing as they make their way toward the summit.

Fortunately, every step is worth the effort.

As soon as we reached the top, the challenges of the climb seemed to disappear. In their place was a feeling of pure awe as we took in the incredible scenery spread out before us. The summit offers panoramic views that stretch for miles in every direction, showcasing the dramatic beauty of Linville Gorge, often called the “Grand Canyon of the East.”

Once on top, the terrain levels out and the trail splits into two separate viewpoints. We explored the left path first before heading back to check out the viewpoint on the right. Each overlook provides a unique perspective of the gorge, the surrounding mountains, and the vast wilderness below. In our opinion, both viewpoints are essential, as each one reveals a different angle of the landscape and offers its own photographic opportunities.

We spent quite a while exploring the rocky overlooks, taking photographs from the dramatic outcroppings and simply admiring the view. Standing on the overhanging rocks while gazing across the endless ridges and valleys was an unforgettable experience. The scale of the scenery is difficult to capture in photographs and must truly be seen in person to be appreciated.

We visited Hawksbill Mountain on August 12, 2022, and were fortunate to have perfect weather. Clear blue skies and excellent visibility allowed us to see for miles across the Blue Ridge Mountains. The sunshine illuminated the rolling ridges, creating layer upon layer of blue and green mountains stretching across the horizon.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply looking for one of the best viewpoints in North Carolina, Hawksbill Mountain delivers an unforgettable adventure. The challenging climb, dramatic overlooks, and stunning views make this hike one of the crown jewels of the Linville Gorge Wilderness.
