Jane Bald via the Appalachian Trail may be one of the prettiest trails I’ve ever hiked. With sweeping mountain views, open grassy ridgelines, and an easy-to-follow trail, it was easy to understand why this hike is so popular.
We parked roadside on the North Carolina side near Carvers Gap, as the small parking area was already almost full. From there, we headed toward the trailhead just across the state line in Tennessee, where the hike begins near the Carvers Gap sign.
The trail is approximately 2.6 miles, making it a manageable hike for many visitors while still delivering some truly spectacular scenery. What makes this trail so special is that the views aren’t limited to one overlook. The mountains seem to unfold around you as you walk, creating one beautiful panorama after another.
The open landscape is a refreshing change from many forested Appalachian trails. Instead of being surrounded by trees the entire time, much of the route follows an exposed grassy ridgeline, allowing you to see for miles in multiple directions.
And the views are simply incredible.
Every turn seemed to offer another reason to stop and take photographs. The rolling Blue Ridge Mountains stretched into the distance, creating layers of ridges that seemed to go on forever. This is definitely one of those hikes where you’ll want to allow extra time because you won’t want to rush past the scenery.
Jane Bald is also a popular destination for families and younger hikers, and we saw plenty of people enjoying the trail during our visit. Several hikers had even camped on top of the mountain, taking advantage of the incredible setting.
I can certainly understand the appeal of waking up to those views!
The popularity of the trail does mean that parking can be challenging, especially on busy weekends and during peak seasons. Still, the spectacular scenery makes it easy to understand why so many people want to experience Jane Bald for themselves.
For me, this hike was all about the views. The combination of the Appalachian Trail, open mountain ridges, and endless Blue Ridge scenery made Jane Bald feel almost magical.
If you’re looking for a relatively short hike with big mountain views, Jane Bald should definitely be on your list. It is one of those trails that stays with you long after you’ve finished hiking.
