Spectacular Flat Top Mountain Trail: One of the Best Hikes in Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, NC

After exploring the historic Cone Manor, we asked a park ranger for a trail recommendation. Without hesitation, the ranger suggested the Flat Top Mountain Trail, one of the signature hikes within Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. What followed was one of the most beautiful hikes we’ve experienced in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

According to AllTrails, the hike is approximately 4.8 miles round trip, although our route ended up being slightly longer. With about 600 feet of elevation gain, the trail provides a moderate challenge while remaining accessible for most hikers.

From the very beginning, the scenery was stunning. The trail winds through the former Cone estate, following historic carriage roads that gently climb through the landscape. Rolling green hills stretched before us, creating a scene that felt more like the countryside of Europe than western North Carolina. The wide trail made for easy walking and allowed us to fully appreciate the beauty surrounding us.

As we continued climbing, the landscape opened into meadows dotted with colorful wildflowers. The fields were alive with activity, and one of the highlights of the hike was watching butterflies drift from bloom to bloom. Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies seemed to be everywhere, adding flashes of orange, yellow, and black to the already vibrant landscape. It was one of those moments that encourages you to slow down, take in the scenery, and simply enjoy being outdoors.

The higher we climbed, the more spectacular the views became. The Blue Ridge Mountains unfolded in every direction, with layer upon layer of ridges fading into the distance. Even on a partly cloudy day, the scenery was remarkable.

The ultimate destination of the trail is Flat Top Mountain, home to a historic fire tower that offers some of the best panoramic views in the region. After reaching the summit, we climbed the tower and were rewarded with incredible 360-degree vistas. From the top, we could see an endless expanse of mountains, forests, and valleys stretching toward the horizon.

The view alone makes this hike worthwhile, but the journey to the summit is equally memorable. Between the rolling hills, wildflower meadows, mountain scenery, and wildlife, every section of the trail offered something special. Of all the trails we have explored in North Carolina, this one easily ranks among our favorites.

On our return, we made one final stop at the Cone family cemetery. Located within the park, the peaceful site is the final resting place of Moses and Bertha Cone, whose vision transformed this mountain landscape into one of the region’s most treasured destinations. Surrounded by towering pine trees and overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, the cemetery provides a quiet place for reflection.

As we stood among the trees beneath a blue sky streaked with clouds, it felt like the perfect ending to an unforgettable day. Combining natural beauty, history, and some of the best views on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Flat Top Mountain Trail offers an experience that is difficult to match.
