Grandfather Mountain NC had been on my list for a while, and I was especially excited to finally walk across the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge. We visited on August 24, 2021, eager to experience the mountain’s spectacular scenery and panoramic views.

Admission was $20 per adult when we visited. Upon entering, we received an audio guide describing the history of Grandfather Mountain NC and highlighting its unique features, wildlife, and biodiversity. The mountain is part of a remarkable landscape that has existed for hundreds of millions of years and is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Grandfather Mountain NC encompasses approximately 2,456 acres of rugged terrain, forests, cliffs, and dramatic mountain scenery. We parked in the lower parking area and began the approximately 0.5-mile walk toward the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Although the distance was short, the trail gradually climbed about 500 feet, making the walk more challenging than I initially expected.
Then came the moment I’d been anticipating: crossing the Mile High Swinging Bridge. I’ll admit I was nervous! The bridge stretches high above the gorge, and I cautiously made my way across toward MacRae Peaks. As I walked, however, my nervousness slowly gave way to awe. The surrounding mountains seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction, and the 360-degree panoramic views were absolutely incredible.

At one point, a raven flew across the gorge, and I hurried to capture the moment with my camera. These unexpected encounters are one of the reasons I love exploring places like Grandfather Mountain—the scenery is spectacular, but you never know what you’ll encounter along the way.
The Calloway Peak Trail is another adventure entirely. It is considered a challenging hike featuring steep sections, ladders, and cables. I’ve heard the trail described as phenomenal, but at the time of our visit, I wasn’t quite ready to tackle it. Perhaps one day I’ll gather enough courage to make the climb!
Until then, I’d happily return to Grandfather Mountain simply for the views. The combination of dramatic peaks, deep gorges, wildlife, and the unforgettable Mile High Swinging Bridge makes this one of North Carolina’s most spectacular mountain destinations.
