Enchanting Moore Farms Botanical Garden: Discover a Hidden Gem in South Carolina, SC

Moore Farms Botanical Garden is a beautiful 500-acre garden and nature preserve in Lake City, South Carolina, founded in 2002 by philanthropist Darla Moore on her family’s ancestral farmland. We visited on May 21, 2022, during a plant sale, and spent our time wandering through the gardens and admiring the incredible attention to detail. According to the garden map, the property features a variety of points of interest, including a fire tower, spring house, main pond, swimming pond, fishing pond, topiaries, mosaic aqueducts, and a vegetable garden. Some areas were closed during our visit, but there was still plenty to explore.

Colorful flowers lined the walkways, while beautiful water features added to the peaceful atmosphere. The vegetable garden was particularly impressive—it was immaculate and clearly cared for with great attention. We even spotted a snake during our walk! Everywhere we looked, it was obvious that these gardens are a labor of love and a source of great pride. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would highly recommend adding Moore Farms Botanical Garden to your South Carolina travel list.

I was also curious about the woman behind this remarkable place and decided to learn more about Darla Moore. A Lake City native, she attended the University of South Carolina, earning a degree in political science before pursuing an MBA at George Washington University. She went on to become a successful investment banker and philanthropist and has served on the boards of numerous organizations. Moore eventually returned to her hometown, where she developed her family’s ancestral land into this remarkable garden.

Her philanthropy has had a significant impact on South Carolina. Since 1998, she has donated millions of dollars to educational institutions and other organizations throughout the state. Among her notable contributions are major gifts to the University of South Carolina’s business school, which bears her name, Clemson University’s School of Education, the McNair Center for Aerospace Innovation and Research at USC, and Claflin University. Visiting Moore Farms Botanical Garden offers more than beautiful scenery—it provides a glimpse into the vision and generosity of a woman who has invested deeply in her hometown and state.
