I headed to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to visit Glencairn Gardens on April 11, 2021, and it was my first time experiencing the gardens during azalea season. What a spectacular festival of color!

Glencairn began as the backyard garden of David and Hazel Bigger in 1928. What started as a private garden has grown into an 11-acre public garden filled with beautiful flowers, mature trees, peaceful paths, and a variety of birds.

I’ve visited Glencairn Gardens during different times of the year, and one of the things I love most is how dramatically the gardens change with the seasons. It’s almost as if the garden has a different wardrobe for every occasion.

I’ve previously written about my June visit to Glencairn, and comparing the two visits really shows how much the landscape can transform. Summer has its own beauty, but spring is something entirely different.

During my April visit, the azaleas were putting on an incredible show. Pink, red, white, and purple blooms seemed to fill every corner of the garden. The vibrant colors against the fresh green foliage created beautiful photography opportunities around almost every bend.

Glencairn Gardens felt especially lively during this visit. Birds moved among the trees while flowers provided bursts of color along the walking paths. I found myself slowing down repeatedly to admire the details and, of course, take photographs.

There was something almost magical about walking beneath the trees surrounded by so many blooms. The winding paths gave me a chance to discover new views at every turn, while the variety of plants kept the scenery interesting. Even though the gardens were colorful everywhere I looked, the azaleas were definitely the stars of the show.

I also appreciated how peaceful the gardens felt despite being in the middle of Rock Hill. It is the kind of place where you can take a leisurely stroll, stop to photograph a flower, watch birds, or simply sit for a while and enjoy your surroundings.

If I had to choose a favorite seasonal “outfit” for Glencairn, spring would definitely win. The azaleas make the gardens feel almost magical, and the sheer amount of color is difficult to capture in photographs.

If you’re visiting Rock Hill in spring, I highly recommend making time for Glencairn Gardens. Azalea season is truly something to experience in person.
