Completed in 1908, Hatley castle was commissioned by James Dunsmuir and his wife Laura. Samuel Maclure, an architect from Victoria designed it. The Dunsmuirs lived in it until 1937 when Laura and her daughter died. The castle was sold to the government in 1940 to become a Naval Training center then Military College. Today it is used by Royal Roads University. We visited the grounds in August 2023, a beautiful summer day. The grounds cover 650 acres, they include a Rose Garden, Italian garden, Japanese garden. They are open dusk to down, free of charge. As the building is used by the university, visits are restricted to seasonal guided tours which we did not take. I very much enjoyed wandering through the colorful and well-appointed gardens. The lovely grounds attract several families especially when the weather permits it.
