Letchworth’s Majestic Gorge: A Fall Hike Through New York’s Grand Canyon, NY

Letchworth State Park is likely the most scenic state park I’ve visited in upstate New York. Spanning more than 14,000 acres along the Genesee River, the park is famous for its dramatic gorge, which plunges 550 feet in certain sections. With three major waterfalls, over 60 miles of hiking trails, and year‑round activities, Letchworth offers endless opportunities for exploration.

We visited in October 2023, arriving just as fall color reached its peak. The trees were ablaze with reds, oranges, and golds, turning every overlook into a postcard. Even though rain lingered throughout the day, the park was bustling with visitors eager to experience its autumn beauty.

I spent my time hiking the southern section of the park along the gorge’s rim. This route offers spectacular views of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Falls, each one framed by steep canyon walls and dense forest. The Middle Falls is the largest and most powerful, sending mist into the air and creating a dramatic backdrop for photos. I walked about 4 miles one way, stopping frequently to admire the scenery and capture the vibrant foliage.

The trail itself was easy, with only a few sets of steps to navigate. The path follows the rim closely, offering constant views of the river carving its way through the gorge. Even in the rain, the experience felt magical—mist rising from the falls, leaves drifting down from the canopy, and the steady roar of water echoing through the canyon.

One important note for visitors: cellular signal is spotty at best throughout the park. Before arriving, I recommend downloading maps, trail routes, or any directions you may need. Letchworth is large, and it’s easy to lose service as you move deeper into the gorge.

Despite the weather, the day was unforgettable. Letchworth’s combination of waterfalls, forest, and canyon scenery makes it a must‑visit destination for anyone exploring upstate New York. If you enjoy fall hikes, this park should be at the top of your list.
