Robert H. Treman State Park: A Magical Fall Hike Through Waterfalls and Gorge Views, NY

Robert H Treman State Park in New York’s Finger Lakes region is a perfect park to explore. Covering 1,110 acres of breathtaking natural beauty, this scenic park is a true gem, featuring a dramatic gorge, towering cliffs, lush forests, and twelve beautiful waterfalls. We visited on October 25th, 2023.

The land that became the park was generously donated to the State of New York by Robert H. Treman and his wife, Laura, preserving this spectacular landscape for generations of visitors to enjoy. From the moment we entered the gorge, I was captivated by the scenery. The highlight of the park is undoubtedly Lucifer Falls, a magnificent 115-foot waterfall that plunges into the deep gorge below. Watching the water cascade over the layered sandstone cliffs was an unforgettable sight.

The gorge itself tells a story millions of years in the making. Over time, erosion carved through the sandstone, revealing the distinctive horizontal rock layers that give the gorge its unique character. Walking along the trail, it felt like stepping through a natural geological masterpiece.

October 25 was a wet and overcast day, and I did my best to protect my camera beneath my rain poncho. Despite my efforts, the rain still found its way in! However, the mist and rain added a special atmosphere to the gorge, making the waterfalls even more dramatic and the forest feel quiet and magical.

We parked near the historic mill, where visitors can step inside to learn about the park’s history and the role the mill played in the area’s past. The rainy weather kept crowds away, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful surroundings almost entirely to ourselves.

We hiked only a portion of the Gorge Trail, focusing on the most scenic section. The trail is considered moderate, mainly due to the many stone steps and elevation changes, but it is well maintained and manageable for most hikers. Along the way, every turn revealed another beautiful view—waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, colorful autumn foliage, and the impressive walls of the gorge.

Fall is truly a spectacular time to visit Robert H. Treman State Park. The combination of vibrant foliage, flowing waterfalls, and dramatic gorge scenery creates a landscape that feels almost unreal.

Even with the rain, I felt incredibly fortunate to experience this beautiful place. Robert H. Treman State Park is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Finger Lakes region, and I highly recommend adding it to your New York travel itinerary.
