Conquering Paradise Falls: An Unforgettable and Challenging 0.5 mile Hike in North Carolina

In August 2024, we visited Paradise Falls in Tuckasegee, North Carolina. We used AllTrails to find the roadside parking area and trailhead, and surprisingly, we had the trail almost entirely to ourselves until we returned to the car.

Although the hike is only about half a mile, don’t let the short distance fool you. The final section is steep, technical, and challenging. Three ropes are installed along the descent, and we definitely relied on them both going down and climbing back up.

Any difficulty is quickly forgotten once the stunning waterfall comes into view. After spending some time admiring the falls, I started the climb back up while my friend Laura snapped photos of me tackling the final section. I’ve shared those photos below to help show what the trail is really like.

Once we reached the top again, we followed the trail to the left to explore the upper falls. I was surprised to see a warning sign about nude bathing and couldn’t help but laugh when I spotted a red bikini bottom hanging from a tree branch nearby.

Even though this hike was difficult, I had a great time. Hiking poles and sturdy shoes are essential, along with the agility to navigate the washed-out sections using ropes, roots, and rocks for support. Thankfully, it hadn’t rained recently, so the trail was relatively dry. I can only imagine how slippery and dangerous the final vertical descent would be after rain.

Overall, I truly enjoyed hiking to Paradise Falls. I’m nearing 60 years old, and my hiking friend is 66, but we hike regularly and felt prepared for the challenge. That said, I would not recommend this trail for beginners, children, or pets.
