Watkins Glen State Park is one of the crown jewels of the Finger Lakes — a place so astonishing that photos barely hint at its magic. Its famous Gorge Trail winds through a narrow canyon carved by Glen Creek, revealing waterfalls, stone bridges, and sculpted rock formations that feel almost otherworldly.

The area’s history stretches back to 1794, when the Watkins family purchased the land, built mills along Glen Creek, and established the town of Jefferson — later renamed Watkins Glen. By 1863, the gorge had transformed into a privately owned resort that quickly became an international attraction. New York State acquired the land in 1906, opening it to the public. After a devastating flood in 1935, the Civilian Conservation Corps spent six years rebuilding and reinforcing the gorge, crafting the iconic stone steps, walls, and pathways visitors enjoy today.
We visited in late October 2023 on a rainy but lively day. After parking at the main entrance, we began our journey along the magnificent Gorge Trail, which features 19 waterfalls in just two miles. The rain made the gorge feel even more dramatic — water rushing louder, leaves clinging to wet stone, mist rising from every cascade.

Curious about a small lake I’d seen on AllTrails, I crossed the Mile Point Bridge and climbed the steps to the Finger Lakes Country Trail (South Rim Trail). This forested path follows Glen Creek and was magical in late autumn. Leaves twirled down around me, carpeting the trail in gold and rust. I briefly wandered off course near a picnic pavilion, but AllTrails quickly guided me back.
Because the Gorge Trail was busy, I returned to the parking lot via the quieter Indian Trail (North Rim Trail), completing a 4.2‑mile loop. Despite the rain, the day was unforgettable. Watkins Glen’s gorge is breathtaking — a place where geology, history, and natural beauty collide in the most memorable way.

Before visiting, check the park’s website for seasonal trail closures. Parking was $10 in October 2023. The lot is small and the park extremely popular, so arriving early is wise. I’d rate the hike as moderate due to numerous steps and muddy terrain after rain.
If You Go
- Check seasonal trail status — The Gorge Trail closes in winter and during hazardous conditions. Always verify openings on the park’s official website before planning your visit.
- Arrive early — The main lot is small and fills quickly, especially on weekends and during peak fall foliage. Early mornings offer calmer crowds and better photo opportunities.
- Parking details — Parking was $10 in October 2023. The main entrance lot provides the easiest access to the Gorge Trail. Additional parking is available at the upper entrance, which connects to the Rim Trails.
- Restrooms — Restrooms are located at both the main and upper entrances. Seasonal facilities may close during winter months.
- Trail difficulty — The Gorge Trail includes many stone steps, narrow walkways, and wet surfaces. After rain, expect muddy terrain and slippery rock. Most visitors consider the hike moderate.
- Bring proper gear — Waterproof shoes, a light rain jacket, and a hiking stick make the experience safer and more comfortable, especially in wet weather.
- Explore alternate routes — The Indian Trail (North Rim) and South Rim Trail offer quieter forested paths and scenic overlooks. They’re great options for avoiding crowds or extending your hike.
- Nearby attractions — Taughannock Falls State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park, and the Watkins Glen Harbor area are all close by and worth adding to your itinerary.
