Draper Sunflowers have become an annual tradition for me. On Saturday, July 9, 2022, I returned to the Draper Sunflowers with my son and mother for what has become a yearly pilgrimage to see the beautiful sunflower fields. Located in McConnell, South Carolina, Draper Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses 806 acres and includes three stocked fishing lakes. The property also borders Historic Brattonsville, a living history museum.

Once inside Draper WMA, we followed the road until it reached the end and looped around. I usually park just before the circle on the right. From there, the walk to the Draper Sunflowers is short and easy—roughly a quarter mile. The path passes a fishing pond before winding through a beautiful, tree-lined section. Then, almost unexpectedly, the trees open up to reveal the bright yellow Draper Sunflowers stretching across the field.
My mother brought her walking sticks to help with balance, but the walk to the sunflower field was easy. Once you reach the Draper Sunflowers, there is no need to walk farther unless you want to explore. I continued toward the end of the field to photograph the sunflowers from different perspectives. Just remember that this is not a loop. Any additional distance you walk through the Draper Sunflowers will need to be covered again on your way back to the vehicle.

During this visit, dark storm clouds were brewing overhead, and I worried that the weather might cut our time with the Draper Sunflowers short. Fortunately, the storm slowly dissipated, much to the delight of the photographers and families who had gathered to enjoy the flowers. Standing among the cheerful yellow blooms is always a wonderful experience, and I never seem to tire of photographing them.

The Draper Sunflowers have become much more than a pretty place to take photographs—they are part of a special family tradition. I look forward to returning each year with my loved ones to enjoy the flowers and the peaceful surroundings. A quote by Malene Rossau perfectly captures the spirit of these beautiful blooms: “Always hold your head high like a sunflower that stretches toward the light.”
