Tennent Mountain Hike was a family adventure for us on Monday, October 19, 2020. We hiked Tennent Mountain via Black Balsam Knob and the Art Loeb Trail on a beautiful fall day, and the scenery did not disappoint. This is a very popular hiking area in Pisgah National Forest, and we quickly realized we weren’t the only ones eager to enjoy the mountain views.

The trail was well maintained and easy to follow, although the popularity of the area meant parking was already crowded. We ended up parking behind a long line of cars. The hike ultimately covered about 5 miles, with the highlight being the spectacular summit of Tennent Mountain.
Once we reached the top, we were rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. We found a spot to sit down and enjoyed our lunch while taking in the glorious vistas. It was one of those moments when stopping to appreciate the scenery felt just as important as reaching the summit.

I didn’t bring hiking poles on this trip, but I definitely wished I had. Some sections would have been easier with the extra stability, and I made a mental note to bring them the next time.
The trail was busy during our visit. There were numerous hikers and even rescue personnel in the area because a young man had gone missing nearby. Despite the circumstances, everyone we encountered was courteous, and several hikers were wearing masks.
One of the most unusual things I saw was a cat hiking the trail! Dogs are common hiking companions, but this was the first time I’d ever encountered a cat enjoying the mountains. Apparently, this particular feline was quite the adventurer, and of course, I had to take a photograph.

Between the easy-to-follow trail, beautiful mountain scenery, and incredible summit views, Tennent Mountain Hike quickly became one of my favorite family hikes. I would happily return, especially in another season when the landscape takes on a completely different appearance.
One thing I especially loved about this hike was how quickly the landscape changed as we gained elevation. The forest gradually opened up, revealing wider mountain vistas with every step. The crisp October air and fall colors made the experience even more enjoyable. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors with my family.
