Spectacular Balsam Grove Waterfalls: A Hidden Gem in North Carolina

Balsam Grove waterfalls were an unexpected and beautiful stop for us on October 22, 2020, as we traveled toward Brevard, North Carolina. Located at Living Waters Ministry, this peaceful property is home to several waterfalls tucked along the French Broad River.

The Balsam Grove waterfalls are on private property belonging to Living Waters Ministry, but visitors have historically been permitted to hike the waterfall trail at their own risk. When we visited, I stopped to ask someone working at the ministry if we could park for a short time, and he gave us permission. Because access policies can change, it’s always best to check current conditions and respect any posted signs or instructions.

The trail begins near the red building, and it doesn’t take long to reach the first waterfalls. Mill Shoals Falls and French Broad Falls create a spectacular pair of approximately 15-foot waterfalls and were one of the highlights of our visit. The sound of the rushing water immediately drew us in, and the surrounding forest made the setting feel especially peaceful.

As we continued along the trail, the scenery kept changing. The river winds through the forest, revealing smaller cascades and beautiful rock formations along the way. Pancake Falls is another waterfall along the route, adding to the variety of sights on this short adventure.

Eventually, we reached Cathedral Falls, also known as Bird Rock Falls. The waterfall is framed by a dramatic rock outcrop, giving it a different character from the twin falls near the beginning of the trail. It was another great place to stop, enjoy the scenery, and take photographs.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this hike was that it didn’t require a long or strenuous trek to see multiple waterfalls. We could take our time, listen to the water, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings without feeling rushed. For photographers, there are plenty of opportunities to capture the waterfalls from different perspectives, especially when the forest is lush.

The trail was easy to slightly moderate when we visited, although exposed tree roots made some sections uneven. Sturdy shoes are recommended, particularly if the trail or rocks are wet. Take your time around the waterfalls and avoid climbing on slippery rocks.

What makes these waterfalls special is how many beautiful sights are packed into a relatively short hike. Between the rushing water, forest scenery, rock formations, and historic red building, this was a memorable stop on our drive through western North Carolina.
