Spectacular Dry Falls NC: Walk Behind a 75-Foot Waterfall on a Scenic Mountain Drive, NC

Dry Falls NC is a popular waterfall near Highlands, North Carolina, and a wonderful stop for anyone exploring the mountains of Nantahala National Forest. We visited on October 20, 2020, and this beautiful 75-foot waterfall was an easy and memorable addition to our day.

Located just off US Highway 64, Dry Falls plunges over a rocky ledge into the gorge below. One of the waterfall’s most distinctive features is the trail that allows visitors to walk behind the waterfall without getting completely soaked. The walkway provides a unique perspective, letting you experience the rushing water from behind while looking out toward the forest beyond.

There is also a lookout where you can admire Dry Falls from above before making your way down the short trail. The combination of the waterfall, gorge, and surrounding forest makes this a particularly photogenic stop.

Getting there is part of the fun. The highway leading to the falls is known as the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, and the road winds through the mountains with plenty of curves. It may be narrow in places, but I thought it was a beautiful and enjoyable drive. The surrounding scenery makes the journey feel like part of the adventure rather than simply a way to reach the waterfall.

Because Dry Falls NC is easily accessible and doesn’t require a long hike, it’s a great destination for visitors who want to see a spectacular waterfall without committing to a strenuous trail. It also makes a convenient stop when exploring the waterfalls and mountain towns of western North Carolina.
