Blue Ridge Parkway Brilliance: A Glorious Fall Drive from Cherokee to Asheville, NC

My mother and I spent October 18, 2020 driving a beautiful stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway, beginning in Cherokee, North Carolina at the southern terminus and heading north toward Asheville. Fall was in full swing, and the mountains were glowing with reds, golds, and warm amber tones—one of those perfect Blue Ridge days where every overlook feels like a painting.

We stopped at several viewpoints, beginning at milepost 468.4, the View Oconaluftee River overlook. The river shimmered below us, framed by dense forest and early morning mist. We continued north, pulling over at quiet overlooks until reaching milepost 435.3, the View Doubletop Mountain viewpoint, where rolling ridges stretched endlessly into the horizon. That was our turnaround point, but the drive between Cherokee and Asheville is packed with scenery worth savoring.

The Blue Ridge Parkway spans 469 miles from Virginia to North Carolina, offering one of America’s most iconic scenic drives. Beyond overlooks, the parkway features countless points of interest: hiking trails, waterfalls, the highest peak in the eastern United States (Mount Mitchell), the oldest river in North America (New River), and the deepest gorge east of the Grand Canyon (Linville Gorge). It’s a corridor of Appalachian beauty that feels timeless in every season, but fall is especially magical.

This short section of the parkway delivered everything we hoped for—quiet overlooks, crisp mountain air, and unforgettable autumn color shared between mother and daughter.
