On May 2, 2021, I joined the Girls Who Hike South Carolina (GWHSC) for a hike to Chandler Rock in Ashmore Heritage Preserve. Located near Caesar’s Head State Park, the preserve is part of the larger Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area and is managed as a Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the hike and honestly thought it would be much more difficult than it turned out to be. To my surprise, we reached the top of Chandler Rock in about an hour after starting the climb.
The trail gains approximately 1,023 feet as it climbs toward the rock, so don’t let the relatively short time to the summit fool you—it is a moderately strenuous hike with a good uphill workout.
The effort is well worth it once you reach Chandler Rock. From the top, we were rewarded with beautiful scenic views across the surrounding mountains and forests. It was a wonderful place to pause, catch our breath, and take in the landscape.
I especially enjoyed hiking with the GWHSC group. Exploring a challenging trail with other hikers makes the experience even more enjoyable, and the camaraderie made the climb feel easier.

After returning from Chandler Rock, we continued our adventure with a hike around Lake Wattacoo. This portion was considerably easier than the climb to the rock, although there was some elevation toward the end of the loop.
The combination of the two hikes gave us approximately 5 miles of hiking for the day. I liked that we were able to experience both a more challenging uphill trail with a rewarding overlook and a relaxing walk around the lake.
The area surrounding Ashmore Heritage Preserve is beautiful, particularly if you enjoy mountain scenery and hiking trails that offer a little bit of a challenge. If you’re visiting the Caesar’s Head area and want to explore beyond the more popular destinations, Chandler Rock is worth considering.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this hike. I had expected the climb to be much harder, but reaching Chandler Rock relatively quickly and being rewarded with those views made the effort worthwhile.
The following poem is posted on the WMA’s page. It was written by Russell Ashmore Sr., who owned a part of the 1,125.5-acre Ashmore Heritage Preserve.
“Leaves are dancing in the wind as the branches nod and sway
As though each twig would like to say,
”Welcome, Friend; it’s a delightful day.”
And may these trees remain uncut
And may this land stay free and clear;
And may God’s creatures roam and feed without the thought of fear.
Yes, it’s great to look upon a tree and feel the thrill God has for us to see;
Or to be shaded by its leafy arms
As well as thrilled by its lofty charms.
Here, the supreme Architect of all creation
Raised his hand to morning bright
