Exploring the Hidden Falls of Slickum Creek: Last Falls, Sweet Thing Falls, SC

Last Falls and Sweet Thing Falls are lesser known waterfalls in upstate South Carolina. In February 2024, after a long hike in Mountain Bridge Wilderness, we made a spontaneous stop at Wildcat Wayside along Highway 276 (Geer Highway) in Cleveland, South Carolina. Recent rainfall had revived the waterfalls, and the roadside cascade was flowing beautifully—its three tiers spilling over mossy rock shelves with a steady, photogenic rush. We snapped a few photos, enjoying how vibrant the falls looked after days of wet weather.

Rather than head home, we decided to explore farther. About 0.3 miles past Wildcat Wayside, we went in search of Last Falls and Sweet Thing. These hidden gems don’t appear on many maps and see far fewer visitors, which makes them perfect for hikers who enjoy quiet, off‑the‑radar spots.

We found the unmarked trail just past a small utility‑company structure—easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. The path follows Slickum Creek, and you’ll hear Last Falls before you see it. At roughly 15 feet high, it sits only a few steps from the road, tucked into a small bend of the creek. The sound of rushing water echoes through the trees, making it feel surprisingly wild despite its proximity to the highway.

From there, we continued along the creek toward Sweet Thing Falls. This section of trail is rougher and less maintained, with roots, mud, and uneven footing. My hiking stick was especially helpful here. Sweet Thing is documented at about 20 feet high, and although smaller than some of the region’s major waterfalls, it has a charm all its own—especially after rain when the flow is strong. The creek tumbles over a rock ledge into a shallow pool, framed by rhododendron and hardwoods.

These two waterfalls may not be famous, but they offer a peaceful, intimate experience with the landscape. If you enjoy discovering places that feel tucked away and untouched, they’re worth the short detour.
