Perched high on a bluff overlooking the Franklin County valley, the 60-foot Sewanee Memorial Cross is one of the most scenic landmarks on the campus of The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Originally built in 1922 as a memorial to Sewanee residents who lost their lives in World War I, the impressive cross has since become a lasting tribute to local men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. Additional plaques were added over the years to honor those who died in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm.
Beyond its historical significance, the memorial offers an incredible panoramic view of the valley below. Standing at the edge of the bluff, I was immediately drawn to the peaceful landscape stretching across the Tennessee countryside.
The trailhead is located right at the Memorial Cross, so I took some time to admire the monument and capture a few photographs before beginning our hike. The combination of history, nature, and sweeping mountain views made this a memorable place to start our adventure.

After completing the hike, we headed out for dinner before returning to the Memorial Cross later that evening. Coming back for sunset was absolutely worth it. As the sun began to sink over the valley, the changing light transformed the already beautiful landscape into a spectacular scene.
Watching the sunset from this historic memorial was the perfect way to end our day in Sewanee.
