Welch’s Point Overlook was our final stop in Tennessee on Sunday, September 27, 2020, and it turned out to be the perfect way to end our trip. We drove up the gravel road leading to the overlook at Virgin Falls State Natural Area, eager to see the views from above. The road to the parking area is mostly gravel and, when we visited, it was definitely rough in places. However, it was still drivable in our vehicle. I imagine the road could become considerably more difficult after heavy rain, so weather conditions are something to consider before making the drive.

Once we reached the parking area, Welch’s Point Overlook was an easy walk away. The trail to Welch’s Point is only about 0.3 miles, making this a very accessible scenic stop even if you aren’t looking for a long hike.
And the views? Absolutely worth the drive!
Welch’s Point Overlook provides an impressive panorama of the surrounding Tennessee landscape. After spending several days exploring the area, it was wonderful to end our trip with such a peaceful and expansive view.
I especially loved that we didn’t have to hike for miles to reach this viewpoint. Sometimes a short walk leads to some of the most rewarding scenery, and Welch’s Point is a perfect example.

The trail itself is part of the beauty of the experience. The short walk through the woods gives you a chance to enjoy the quiet surroundings before the landscape suddenly opens up at the overlook. There is something exciting about approaching a viewpoint without knowing exactly what you will see until you reach the end.
Once we arrived, we took our time enjoying the scenery and taking photographs. The expansive landscape seemed to stretch endlessly, and the elevated perspective gave us a completely different appreciation for the natural beauty of the area. It was a peaceful place to pause, breathe in the fresh air, and reflect on our Tennessee adventure.

Because the walk is so short, Welch’s Point is also a great option for travelers who want a beautiful view without committing to a strenuous hike. You can easily combine the overlook with other nearby attractions and still have plenty of time to explore.
For photographers, I recommend allowing yourself more time than you might expect. Even though the trail is short, the overlook offers plenty of opportunities to experiment with different compositions. The surrounding forest and distant landscape create a beautiful contrast.
The combination of the rugged access road, short forest walk, and spectacular overlook made this a memorable final stop. If you’re already exploring Virgin Falls State Natural Area, I would definitely consider adding Welch’s Point to your itinerary.
It was a simple visit, but one that left us with a beautiful final memory of Tennessee before heading home.
