In February 2024, we drove to Gorges State Park in Saphire, NC to see the 150-foot Rainbow Falls. We parked at the trail head and proceeded on this enjoyable 3 mile out and back hike that led us to Rainbow and Turtleback falls. We did not go past Turtleback, I had read that Misty falls is on private land and barely visible from the park. We attempted to see Stair Step Falls on the way back, got close but stopped just before due to what we perceived as difficult terrain. The hike to Rainbow was moderate with tree roots, quite a few steps, a water crossing, and a few muddy spots especially near the fall due to mist. The area had received 2.5 in of rain just two days before, so the falls were dropping in full force. I took my hiking stick as always and was glad I did. The trail is pretty meandering along Horsepasture river offering scenic stops with lovely cascades. Highly recommend this rewarding hike in Gorges State Park, NC. The visitor center offers a few sandwiches for sale but no coffee. They have a nice selection of park gifts, Tshirts, caps, sweatershirts etc. Bathrooms at the visitor center are clean and the balcony boasts picturesque mountain views.
