Sandstone Falls: Discover the Largest Waterfall in New River Gorge National Park, WV

In October 2021, my husband and I set out to visit Sandstone Falls, one of the most impressive natural attractions in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Our first stop was the Sandstone Falls Overlook, where we enjoyed sweeping views from approximately 600 feet above the river.

Sandstone Falls,

The drive along Route 20 was an attraction in itself. The winding road offered stunning views of the New River, the surrounding mountains, and the charming town of Hinton. Around nearly every bend, we found another scenic vista worth photographing. West Virginia’s rugged beauty was on full display, making the journey just as memorable as the destination.

After spending time at the overlook, we continued to the boardwalk trail that leads visitors closer to the falls. The short, accessible walkway provides excellent viewing opportunities and allows you to experience the power of the river up close.

Sandstone Falls,

Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall in New River Gorge National Park, stretching an impressive 1,500 feet across the New River. Although the falls are relatively low in height, dropping between 10 and 25 feet, their tremendous width creates a dramatic and unforgettable scene. Water tumbles over a series of rocky ledges, creating multiple channels and cascades that span the river from bank to bank.

According to the National Park Service, Sandstone Falls marks “the dramatic starting line for the New River’s final rush through the New River Gorge to its confluence with the Gauley River to form the Kanawha River.” Standing on the boardwalk and watching the river plunge over the falls, it is easy to appreciate the significance of this landscape and the powerful forces that have shaped it.

Sandstone Falls,

Whether viewed from the overlook high above or from the boardwalk at river level, Sandstone Falls is a must-see destination for anyone visiting New River Gorge National Park. The combination of scenic mountain vistas, river views, and West Virginia’s largest waterfall makes this one of the park’s most rewarding stops.
