Babcock State Park: Discover West Virginia’s Iconic and Photogenic Grist Mill, WV

Located about 20 miles southeast of the New River Gorge Bridge, Babcock State Park is a beautiful 4,127-acre destination known for its mountain scenery, forested trails, peaceful lake, and, most famously, the picturesque Glade Creek Grist Mill.

We visited the park on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, primarily to photograph the historic grist mill. Although our visit was relatively short, the scenery and historic character of the park made it a worthwhile stop during our West Virginia travels.

Glade Creek Grist Mill

The Glade Creek Grist Mill was definitely the highlight of our visit. With its rustic wooden structure, rushing creek, and forested mountain setting, it is easy to see why the mill is one of West Virginia’s most photographed landmarks.

The mill is fully functional and was constructed using parts from three historic West Virginia mills. It is a replica of Cooper’s Mill, which previously stood on the site.

The combination of the old mill and surrounding scenery creates an especially photogenic setting. I could have spent much more time photographing it from different angles and capturing the way the water and landscape frame the building.

Exploring Babcock State Park

After spending time photographing the mill, we hiked a short trail to an overlook. Unfortunately, the trees and leaves obstructed much of the view during our October visit.

I suspect the overlook would be much more scenic during the winter months when the leaves have fallen and the surrounding mountains are more visible. Still, it was a pleasant walk and gave us a chance to experience another part of the park.

We then continued by car toward another overlook, stopping along the way at Boley Lake, a peaceful 19-acre lake surrounded by trees.

The park offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, fishing, boating, camping, and geocaching. Whether you want to spend several days exploring the park or simply stop to photograph the famous mill, Babcock has something to offer.

My Favorite Part of Babcock State Park

While the park’s trails, lake, and mountain scenery were beautiful, the Glade Creek Grist Mill was easily my favorite part of the visit.

The mill’s rustic appearance against the backdrop of the creek and surrounding forest makes it a dream location for photographers. Even though we didn’t spend an entire day exploring Babcock State Park, the mill alone made the visit memorable.

If you’re visiting the New River Gorge area, consider adding Babcock State Park to your itinerary. The iconic mill is one of those places that is even more impressive in person than it appears in photographs.
