Unforgettable Horseback Riding at Camelot Farms on St. Helena Island, SC

On Saturday, May 15, 2021, my family and I signed up for a horseback riding adventure at Camelot Farms on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Beaufort County, St. Helena Island is quintessential Lowcountry, with salt marshes, maritime forests, winding roads, and majestic live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

This wasn’t our first visit to Camelot Farms. We had discovered the farm in the summer of 2016 when we enjoyed our first seaside horseback riding experience. When we found ourselves back in the Lowcountry in 2021, we couldn’t resist returning for another memorable ride.

Summer 2016 trail ride memory

Founded by Mark and Anne Kennedy in 1999, Camelot Farms offers much more than guided trail rides. The 70-acre property is home to pastures, a tack room, work rings, a receiving barn, and a covered arena. The farm also provides horse boarding, breeding, training, and equestrian lessons.

While we were there, I noticed several happy children washing horses after their riding lessons. They looked like they were having an absolute blast! Watching them brought back memories of how much I would have loved an opportunity like that when I was growing up. There’s something special about being around horses, especially for children who are learning to care for and connect with these beautiful animals.

Our return visit reminded me why horseback riding is such a fun way to experience the Lowcountry. Instead of simply driving through the landscape, you have the opportunity to slow down and experience it from a completely different perspective. The peaceful pace of a horse allows you to appreciate the surrounding scenery and enjoy being outdoors.

St. Helena Island itself is a wonderful destination for anyone who enjoys the Lowcountry. Located near Beaufort, the island combines natural beauty with a relaxed rural atmosphere. Salt marshes, maritime forests, historic properties, and enormous live oaks create the distinctive landscape that makes this part of South Carolina so photogenic.

Camelot Farms also offers a guest house and camping facilities, making it possible to extend your stay and enjoy more of the area. With Beaufort nearby and numerous opportunities for boating, kayaking, fishing, and other water activities, there is plenty to do beyond the horseback riding.

Having experienced Camelot Farms twice, I can say that horseback riding here is an adventure I’d happily repeat. Whether you’re an experienced rider or simply looking for a fun way to experience the South Carolina Lowcountry, a visit to this beautiful farm can make for a memorable outing.
