I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Port Royal Cypress Wetlands on May 12, 2021. This beautiful little oasis sits right in the heart of downtown Port Royal, South Carolina, making it an easy and rewarding stop for anyone visiting the area.

A half-mile boardwalk winds through the wetlands, providing an up-close look at the area’s plants and wildlife. Despite being surrounded by town, it feels surprisingly peaceful and secluded once you’re on the boardwalk.

The wetlands are home to an impressive variety of birds, including egrets, herons, anhingas, moorhens, and blackbirds, along with alligators that inhabit the waterways. One of the things that fascinated me most was seeing so many different species sharing the same trees.

There were also an amazing number of active nests during my visit. Birds were flying in and out, tending to their young and settling into the trees. For a photographer, it was heaven! I could have stayed much longer watching the activity and photographing the birds.

I found myself stopping frequently along the boardwalk because there was always something happening. One moment I was watching a bird perched quietly among the branches, and the next, another would fly overhead or disappear into the vegetation. The wetlands felt incredibly alive.

The cypress trees and calm water added to the atmosphere. Reflections on the water created beautiful photography opportunities, while the sounds of birds made it easy to forget that I was walking through an area surrounded by downtown Port Royal.

The story behind the wetlands is just as interesting as the wildlife. In 1999, a grant was secured to restore the area as a rookery, creating a safe place for nesting birds. The wetlands also serve an important practical purpose by helping manage stormwater runoff.

The restoration was incredibly successful. What was once an area in need of attention has become an important habitat for wildlife and a wonderful place for people to observe nature.

I loved how accessible the wetlands are. You don’t have to spend hours hiking through the woods to experience South Carolina’s Lowcountry wildlife. The short boardwalk makes it possible to enjoy the scenery and wildlife at a leisurely pace.

For me, the combination of alligators, nesting birds, cypress trees, reflections, and peaceful wetlands made this a memorable stop. It was magical, fun, educational—and definitely a photographer’s dream.

If you’re anywhere near Port Royal, I highly recommend adding the Cypress Wetlands to your itinerary. Bring your camera and take your time. You never know what might appear in the trees or water!
