Hidden Gem: Discover the Stunning Beauty of Edisto Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg

Edisto Memorial Gardens is a true hidden gem in the heart of Orangeburg, South Carolina. On June 14, 2020, I finally discovered this beautiful garden, even though I had lived in South Carolina since 1983. I couldn’t believe I had never heard of it before! Sometimes the most rewarding travel discoveries are the places hiding in plain sight.

The city of Orangeburg traditionally celebrates the Festival of Roses in May, attracting visitors who come to admire the gardens when the roses are at their peak. Unfortunately, the festival was canceled in 2020 because of COVID-19. The roses, however, didn’t seem to know there was a pandemic! They bloomed beautifully, filling the gardens with vibrant color and providing plenty of photographic opportunities.

The park itself is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. I especially enjoyed walking along the newly renovated boardwalks that stretch over the swampy, dark waters. The boardwalks provided a wonderful opportunity to experience a more natural side of the garden, surrounded by towering trees, lush vegetation, and still black water.

I was surprised by how peaceful the wetlands felt despite being located in the middle of the city. As I walked beneath the enormous trees, the sounds and scenery made it easy to forget I was in an urban area. The contrast between the carefully maintained gardens and the wild-looking wetlands was one of my favorite aspects of the visit.

Of course, the roses were a major highlight. Even though the Festival of Roses had been canceled, the flowers continued to put on their annual show. Rows of colorful blooms brightened the landscape, and I spent time photographing them from different angles. Nature clearly wasn’t going to let a canceled festival stop the show!

The grounds were very well maintained, and there were plenty of beautiful areas to explore. Unfortunately, the bathrooms were closed during my visit, likely because of the COVID-19 restrictions at the time. It was a minor inconvenience and didn’t take away from the overall experience.

I left Edisto Memorial Gardens already planning a return visit. There was so much more I wanted to explore, and I knew the gardens would look completely different as the seasons changed. A place with both cultivated gardens and natural wetlands is the kind of destination that rewards multiple visits.

What struck me most was how long I had lived in South Carolina without knowing this place existed. Discovering Edisto Memorial Gardens was a wonderful reminder that you don’t always have to travel far to find something beautiful. Sometimes an unexpected adventure is waiting just around the corner.

If you’re visiting Orangeburg or traveling through South Carolina, I highly recommend adding this garden to your itinerary. Whether you’re interested in roses, photography, nature, or simply want a peaceful place to walk, Edisto Memorial Gardens has plenty to offer.
