Exploring the Scenic West Columbia Riverwalk, SC

Columbia, SC is fortunate to have four beautiful riverfront trails: the West Columbia Riverwalk, the Columbia Riverfront and Historic Canal, the Saluda Riverwalk, and the Cayce Riverwalk. Each offers easy, scenic walking with paved paths, shaded stretches, and peaceful boardwalks.

On June 6, 2024, I met friends at the West Columbia Riverwalk and brought my camera along. This particular park holds a special place in my heart — it’s where I photographed my son and his fiancée’s engagement session. The trail runs parallel to the Congaree River, framed by towering old trees and striking riverfront homes, making it endlessly photogenic.

The park has multiple entrances, all with restrooms. I usually park near the open‑air amphitheater at 109 Alexander Road, where there’s also an additional lot across the street. The iconic Gervais Street Bridge steals the show every time; its arches are stunning in any season and it’s the first place I bring visitors who are new to Columbia.

From the amphitheater entrance, you can walk left under the Gervais Street Bridge for about 0.4 miles until you reach the end of the park near the Jarvis Klapman Boulevard Bridge. Turning back, you can continue past the amphitheater toward Cayce along the Three Rivers Greenway. This stretch winds past riverfront homes, under the Blossom Street Bridge, across a lovely boardwalk, and by a covered picnic shelter. Eventually, it connects with the Cayce Riverwalk.

Along the way, you’ll pass two railroad bridges and the historic Granby Lock before reaching Kelley Jones Park in Cayce, where you’ll find a small playground and restrooms. My round‑trip walk clocked in at about six miles. You can also continue through the neighborhood to reconnect with the Cayce Riverwalk if you want to extend your route.

If you haven’t explored these river walks yet, I highly recommend them. I often drive downtown just to enjoy a peaceful, scenic stroll.

If You Go

Choose your entrance — The West Columbia Riverwalk has several access points, all with restrooms. The amphitheater at 109 Alexander Road is a convenient starting spot with ample parking.
Enjoy the Gervais Street Bridge — This iconic landmark is visible from multiple points along the trail and is especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
Follow the Three Rivers Greenway — Walk left toward Jarvis Klapman Boulevard or right toward Cayce for a longer route that includes boardwalks, bridges, and riverfront homes.
Plan for a longer walk — A full out‑and‑back to Kelley Jones Park is about six miles. Benches are available along the way.
Bring your camera — Between the river views, historic bridges, and shaded paths, this trail offers endless photography opportunities.
Explore nearby trails — The Saluda Riverwalk, Cayce Riverwalk, and Columbia Canal are all close by if you want to make a day of it.
