Epic Middle Saluda Passage: A Challenging Palmetto Trail Adventure 2018, SC

Middle Saluda Passage was the setting for an unforgettable hiking adventure in November 2018. I headed to the Upstate with the Ladies of the Palmetto Trail to explore this beautiful section of the Palmetto Trail in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area.

We started at the Raven Falls parking area across from Caesars Head State Park and set out for a full day on the trail. By the time we finished, we had covered approximately 12 miles and climbed the equivalent of 102 flights of stairs. Needless to say, I was completely exhausted by the end of the hike!

But exhaustion was quickly replaced by an incredible sense of accomplishment. There is something deeply satisfying about finishing a challenging hike and realizing just how much you accomplished one step at a time.

The hike took us through several trails and sections, giving us a wonderful variety of scenery and terrain. We covered portions of the Raven Cliff Falls Trail, Dismal Trail, Gum Gap/Foothills Trail, and Naturaland Trust Trail.

The combination of mountain terrain, forest scenery, waterfalls, and challenging climbs made this a memorable adventure. Every section brought something different, and the changing scenery kept us motivated as we worked our way through the miles.

Of course, hiking with a fun group made the experience even better. I had been invited to join the ladies at the last minute, and I’m so glad I said yes. There’s something special about hiking with people who understand the joy—and occasional suffering—that comes with tackling a long trail!

By the end, my legs were tired, but I felt incredibly proud of what we’d accomplished. The 12 miles were challenging, but the camaraderie, scenery, and sense of achievement made every step worthwhile.

A huge thank-you to this wonderful group of ladies for including me at the last minute. What could have been just another hike became a fantastic memory.
