On January 24, 2021, I met up with a smaller group from Girls Who Hike SC to explore the Estatoe Narrows Trail in the Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve. Covid precautions shaped the outing—no carpooling, limited group size, and masks worn at each hiker’s discretion—but the spirit of adventure was still very much alive. We gathered at the Foothills Trail parking lot off Highway 178, where the final 0.3‑mile stretch of road was unpaved yet easily manageable for any vehicle.

The trail itself was a refreshing winter escape. Stretching about 5 miles out and back, it offered a mix of gentle elevation changes, wooden steps, and quiet forest pathways. The route was easy to follow, weaving through hardwoods and rhododendron thickets that framed the trail even in winter’s muted palette. The crisp air, soft ground, and filtered sunlight created a peaceful rhythm as we walked deeper into the preserve.
The final descent toward the waterfall was noticeably steeper, but the payoff was worth every step. The waterfall at Estatoe Narrows spills through a narrow gorge, creating a secluded, almost hidden scene that feels untouched by time. The sound of rushing water echoed through the trees, adding a sense of drama to the otherwise calm hike.

Hiking with Girls Who Hike SC always brings a sense of camaraderie. Even with a smaller group, the conversations, shared encouragement, and collective appreciation for nature made the experience memorable. Winter hikes often reveal a quieter side of the landscape, and Estatoe Narrows delivered exactly that—serenity, beauty, and a glimpse of South Carolina’s preserved wilderness.

It’s a trail I’d happily revisit in spring or fall, when the forest transforms with blooms or color. The Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve is one of those upstate gems that rewards hikers in every season.

Good day for a hike with some exertion to keep muscles warm… just say I’m surprised that you went on a Sunday. What happened to Sunday dinner? Did everybody go hungry? LOL
Well that’s when Emily scheduled it so I went. We got takeouts. I am starting to diversify 😂
The pictures make that hike very inviting. The waterfall pics were so pretty. We’re you able to get close to the waterfall?
Close enough but not such that I could dip my feet in it. Thank you.
