Stunning Furman University Greenville SC: A Picturesque Campus Worth Exploring, SC

Furman University is the oldest private university in South Carolina, founded in 1826. The university was named after Richard Furman, a Baptist clergyman who strongly advocated for higher education. Originally established in Edgefield, South Carolina, the university moved twice before eventually settling in downtown Greenville. In 1850, it was chartered as a university under the leadership of Richard Furman’s son, James Clement Furman. The university moved to its current Poinsett Highway campus in 1958 and became a coeducational institution in 1961.

We visited the beautiful Furman University campus on Sunday, May 29, 2022, and enjoyed a leisurely walk around part of the lake. The campus is incredibly scenic, with mature trees, gardens, water views, and picturesque architecture. We made our way toward the clock tower, stopping along the way at the Jane Earle Furman Rose Garden, where colorful roses added another layer of beauty to the landscape. We also admired a model of the Ravenel Bridge and wandered through a small Japanese garden where a family of geese had settled in for the afternoon.

One of the most memorable moments of our visit was completely unexpected. We encountered a young woman celebrating her Quinceañera. Dressed in a beautiful blue gown, she looked like Cinderella and was absolutely stunning. I was delighted when she allowed me to take her photograph while her professional photographer was preparing for the photo session. It was a lovely, spontaneous moment that added a personal touch to our visit.

Furman University is more than a historic institution—it is also one of Greenville’s most picturesque places to stroll, photograph, and enjoy the outdoors. The lake, gardens, clock tower, and beautifully maintained grounds make it an especially appealing destination for photographers and anyone who appreciates peaceful scenery.
