I was invited to hike Stool Mountain with a group of new friends on December 4th, 2025. My first attempt to hike this trail had been cut short by a family emergency, so I happily jumped at the chance to finally explore it. Stool Mountain is one of the newest additions to Table Rock State Park’s trail system, and ever since reading about its creation I’ve been eager to experience it for myself. Now that I’ve hiked it once, I’m already looking forward to returning in other seasons to watch how the landscape changes.
The trail itself is roughly 5.3 miles out and back with about 1,430 feet of elevation gain. It is well maintained and easy to follow through blue over white blazes. AllTrails’ description originally intimidated me—the words “a strenuous climb over boulders and rocks” had me picturing something far more technical than it turned out to be. Even the park’s official strenuous rating felt heavier than my experience. While there are rocky sections, the ascent is gradual and steady, and the frequent mountain views make the climb feel rewarding rather than punishing. I would personally call it a moderate hike, especially in cool weather.
Winter had already stripped the trees bare, and signs of the March 2025 wildfire were still visible across the ridgelines, creating an almost stark beauty along the way. Yet even in this season, the trail felt peaceful and full of promise. Stool Mountain may be new, but it winds through a landscape that is healing and renewing itself—making our hike scenic, and quietly meaningful.

As we reached the summit at 2,615 feet, we were greeted with absolutely breathtaking views. I’d never seen Table Rock Mountain or the Table Rock Reservoir from such a close and striking vantage point, and it felt like the perfect payoff after the climb. Who doesn’t love a hike with a true reward at the top? Stool Mountain delivers exactly that.

After descending the mountain, we crossed the new footbridge to explore the Carrick Creek area. This short, family-friendly trail offers an easy walk to a viewing platform overlooking a lovely waterfall—perfect for a quick stop and a few photos. From there, we continued back to our vehicles by Pinnacle Lake, finishing the day with a total of 6.8 miles.
