I visited Riverbanks Zoo’s Wild Lights on 12/18/2023 with my family. The zoo is located in Columbia South Carolina. I had not been to see the zoo lit up for Christmas before. Apparently, I picked the best year to come as they added lanterns to the traditional light displays. Wild Lights is a special event that runs on select evenings during Christmas time. The zoo closes at 4pm on such nights to prepare for the evening event. Even though we visited on a weeknight, the zoo was pretty crowded with visitors bundled up for the cold of December.
I thought the atmosphere was absolutely magical. If you are not feeling the Christmas spirit yet, head on over to Riverbanks Zoo. It is guaranteed to bring out the kid in you. Light refreshments were available for sale, we enjoyed munching on popcorn as we walked the illuminated pathways. There are over 60 amazing lanterns to admire. My mother took a break to warm up at the fire pit tables by the carousel. What is it about carousels that always draws our attention? Is it the nostalgia? The sound of delighted children? I think adults are drawn to carousels because we are secretly hoping that the children’s awe and excitement might be contagious. I smiled as I watched the excited little ones rush over to pick their favorite animal to ride on. It brought memories of my own children when they were that age.
If you plan to go and I highly recommend that you do, Wild Lights will run on select nights until January 14th from 5pm to 9pm. Cost for nonmembers is either $19.99 or $24.99 depending on the night. Tickets must be purchased online prior to arrival.
