James Island Festival of Lights

Magical James Island Festival of Lights: A Charleston Holiday Tradition, SC

The James Island Festival of Lights has been a beloved Charleston holiday tradition for more than thirty years. With millions of twinkling lights illuminating James Island County Park, it is an experience that brings plenty of Christmas magic to the Lowcountry.

James Island Festival of Lights

We visited on Saturday, December 4, 2021. I won’t lie—the line to enter was quite long. However, once we made our way inside, I quickly decided that the wait was worth it.

The main attraction is the spectacular drive-through display, where more than two million lights transform the park into a shimmering wonderland. As you slowly make your way through the displays, you’ll see colorful scenes, animated figures, and lights dancing to music. The displays featuring Charleston landmarks were among my favorites, especially the Ravenel Bridge and Charleston-style houses. They added a wonderful local touch to the experience.

But the fun doesn’t stop when you finish the drive-through. You can park your vehicle and enjoy a variety of festival activities, including a leisurely train ride, carousel, rock climbing, and a massive 50-ton sand sculpture. Children can also have their pictures taken with Santa and his helpers.

Of course, no holiday festival would be complete without festive treats. You’ll find plenty of classic concessions, including hot chocolate, popcorn, cotton candy, and s’mores that you can roast yourself.

We purchased our tickets online before arriving. When we visited in 2021, advance tickets were $15 on regular nights, while admission was $25 per vehicle on weekends and peak nights. Tickets purchased on site cost an additional $5. Festival hours were 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the event running through December 31.
