On Sunday, October 17, 2021, I hiked the Rice Fields Trail with my brother, my niece, and their sweet dog, Autumn. This beautiful section of the Appalachian Trail was a wonderful fall adventure, offering a moderate climb, colorful forest scenery, and spectacular mountain vistas.

The Rice Fields Trail is approximately 5 miles round trip with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain. We visited on a beautiful October day when the forest was beginning to transition into its autumn colors. At the start of the hike, most of the leaves were still green, but the higher we climbed, the more fall asserted itself. With every step upward, the colors became more vibrant until the trail seemed to burst into a true festival of autumn color.
The trail gradually angles uphill until reaching a flatter section where the shelter stands. Although there is a steady climb, the Rice Fields Trail is well marked and not particularly technical. We encountered some exposed tree roots and a few downed trees, but nothing that made the trail difficult to navigate.
Once we reached the top, we stopped to admire the scenery and enjoy a well-deserved break. The Appalachian Trail continues beyond this point, but we decided to turn around and make our way back. The views from the top were absolutely stunning. My brother pointed out that we were looking across toward West Virginia, making the vista even more impressive.

One of my favorite things about the Rice Fields Trail was how peaceful it felt. We encountered a handful of groups of day hikers and a few through-hikers, but the trail was never particularly crowded. It was easy to find quiet moments to appreciate the scenery and photograph the changing leaves.
Autumn, our canine companion, seemed to enjoy the hike as much as we did. She happily made the climb with us and added an extra bit of fun to our family outing.
The Rice Fields Trail is a great choice if you’re looking for a moderate Appalachian Trail hike with rewarding views. The elevation gain provides a good workout, but the beautiful scenery makes the effort worthwhile. And if you visit in the fall, the changing foliage adds an extra layer of beauty to an already scenic trail.

I highly recommend the Rice Fields Trail, particularly for hikers who enjoy mountain vistas and colorful autumn scenery without tackling an extremely long or technical hike. The combination of peaceful woods, a steady climb, a mountain shelter, and beautiful views made this one of my favorite fall hiking experiences.
The changing landscape was a highlight from beginning to end. What started as a mostly green forest gradually transformed into a colorful autumn display, making the climb feel like a journey through two different seasons.
