Skyline Triumph: A Strenuous and Stunning Climb to McAfee Knob on Virginia’s Triple Crown, VA

During Thanksgiving week, I traveled to Virginia to visit my brother, and one of the highlights of the trip was hiking McAfee Knob, the most photographed viewpoint on the Appalachian Trail. My niece and son joined me for this 8‑mile strenuous hike, and together we tackled one of the three peaks that make up Virginia’s Triple Crown—a personal goal I’ve been eager to pursue.

The trail begins gently, weaving through quiet forest before gradually climbing the mountain. The ascent totals roughly 1,900 feet, and while the trail is well‑maintained, it is undeniably challenging. Still, the effort is rewarded at every turn. Mountain views peek through the trees as you climb, offering glimpses of the beauty waiting at the summit. I felt a thrill each time I spotted a white blaze on the trees—those iconic Appalachian Trail markers I had dreamed of following for years.

McAfee Knob is extremely popular, and the crowds reflected that. Even so, I felt remarkably safe. Most hikers wore masks or stepped aside to allow others to pass, demonstrating thoughtful trail etiquette. The sense of community on the trail was strong—everyone seemed excited to be out enjoying nature, even during a time when gathering was limited.

Parking can be a challenge. When we arrived, the lot was already full, so my brother dropped us off and returned later to pick us up. It’s important to note that parking along the road is prohibited, and towing is strictly enforced. Planning ahead is essential, especially on weekends or holidays.

The trail itself is a joy to hike. It alternates between gentle inclines, rocky stretches, and forested paths, keeping the experience varied and engaging. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler and the views more dramatic. The anticipation built steadily until we finally reached the summit—and what a summit it is.

McAfee Knob’s iconic rock ledge juts out over the valley, creating one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the entire Appalachian Trail. Standing on that ledge feels like standing on the edge of the world. The sweeping panorama of ridgelines, valleys, and distant peaks is breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment after such a strenuous climb makes the moment even more meaningful. It’s easy to understand why this spot is photographed so often—it’s simply unforgettable.

Hiking McAfee Knob strengthened my resolve to complete the entire Virginia Triple Crown. Each peak offers its own personality, and McAfee Knob—with its combination of challenge, beauty, and Appalachian Trail magic—was the perfect place to begin that journey. The experience left me even more inspired to return to Virginia’s mountains, knowing each trail reveals a new layer of the state’s rugged charm.
