Finlay Park: Exploring Columbia’s 18-acre Beautifully Revitalized Urban Oasis, SC

I have fond memories of packing a picnic and taking my children—along with friends and visiting family—to Finlay Park many years ago. As they grew older, we returned to watch Shakespeare in the Park. Over time, our visits became less frequent as the park began to feel unsafe.

Fast forward to November 2025, when Finlay Park reopened following a $25 million revitalization. I visited in January 2026 with a group of friends and was immediately in awe of the thoughtful landscape architecture and new additions. The iconic circular fountain—long a Columbia landmark—sparkled in the bright sunlight, its water cascading into winding streams and smaller waterfalls alongside playful, colorful turtle sculptures.

As I began walking the path, a park ranger stopped me to inspect my camera bag. A clear-bag policy is in effect throughout the park, and while camera bags are allowed, they must be checked. I also noticed several officers patrolling the grounds, which added a welcome sense of safety and reassurance.

Our group visit took place under the bright midday sun. I immediately knew that I wanted to return at sunset for better light. A few days later, I did just that—the park shimmered under the warm sunset tones while the Lantern glowed in purple lights.

With its famous circular fountain, an outdoor performance stage, pickleball courts ($20/hr.), a sleek outdoor fitness court, pitch and putt disc golf, two ping pong tables, sculpture garden, walking and running tracks, roller skate rentals, a splash pad (May-September), two children playscapes, remote controlled sailboat rental, and soccer goals, the park offers something for every age. Most of all, it stands as a safe, inviting space where scenery, wellness, and recreation come together in the heart of Columbia. I lingered at the playgrounds, wishing I had brought my grandson along. I am now looking forward to sunset yoga as well as concerts at the park.

A Bit of Finlay Park’s History

As I read the park’s history on its web site, I was surprised to learn that Finlay Park’s story dates back to the mid-1800s. Originally known as Sidney Park, it served as a green retreat in the heart of Columbia. In the early 1900s, the land was used for railroad operations before being returned to its roots as an urban park in 1991, when it was renamed in honor of former Columbia mayor Kirkman Finlay. Plans for its latest revitalization began in 2010, construction started in 2023, and after two years, the park reopened to great acclaim on November 15, 2025. Today, Finlay Park feels renewed and vibrant—a true gem in the heart of Columbia once again.
