On July 16th, our group had the pleasure of taking a guided tour of the South Carolina Governor Mansion—and what an unforgettable experience it was. The unexpected highlight of our visit came when First Lady Peggy McMaster graciously stopped by, accompanied by her charming English Bulldog, Mac. Warm and welcoming, she spent time chatting with us and posing for photos. It was a delightful surprise and a moment we’ll always remember!

Located on Arsenal Hill, one of Columbia’s most historic and prestigious neighborhoods, the mansion has a storied past. Originally built in 1842 as part of the Arsenal Military Academy, the building served as officers’ quarters. Remarkably, it was the only structure from the academy to survive the Civil War. In 1868, Governor James Orr spearheaded efforts to renovate the former dormitory into a gubernatorial residence. The first official occupant, Governor Robert K. Scott, moved in a year later—and over thirty governors have called it home since, each leaving behind a unique legacy.
The mansion sits on nine beautifully landscaped acres that include two additional historic buildings: the Lace House (1855) and the Caldwell-Boylston House (1830). Over the years, the mansion has hosted U.S. Presidents and other notable dignitaries, earning its reputation as a center of Southern hospitality and political history.

Significant upgrades have modernized the home through the decades. Electricity, indoor plumbing, and elegant architectural renovations have all enhanced the residence. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of fine art, antique furniture, silverware, sculptures, and historical memorabilia—many of which were generously donated, making the home feel like a living museum.
Tours are available by reservation through the official website. In the summer, they are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with additional Thursday morning tours in other seasons.
Don’t miss the photo galleries below! One features the mansion’s striking exterior and grounds, and the other offers a glimpse into the stately interior rooms.
