What can I possibly say about Gooseberry Falls State Park in October? Beautiful trails, spectacular waterfalls, picturesque scenery, and stunning fall colors don’t even begin to capture how magical this place feels in autumn. The entire park transforms into a glowing tapestry of reds, golds, and fiery oranges, and every breeze sends leaves drifting across the forest floor like confetti.

We hiked the Fifth Falls and Superior Hiking Trail Loop — an enjoyable, mostly easy, and incredibly scenic 3‑mile route. The trail winds over wooden bridges, leads to gorgeous lookouts, follows a dramatic river gorge, and passes a historic retaining wall built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934. We lingered by the waterfalls, watched leaves swirl in the current, and soaked in the peaceful rhythm of the Gooseberry River.

Sections of both the Gitchi‑Gami State Trail and the Superior Hiking Trail pass through the park, making it a hub for hikers, cyclists, and fall‑color seekers. The park is named for the series of waterfalls along the Gooseberry River — five in total — each one unique and breathtaking in its own way.

What struck me most was how accessible the beauty is. You don’t have to hike far to reach incredible views, and families, casual walkers, and seasoned hikers all share the same sense of awe. The roar of the Middle Falls, the quiet pools near Fifth Falls, and the sweeping overlooks create a perfect blend of adventure and serenity.
